Welts or hives?!? Please help!?
Posted by: | Comments*IF YOU HAVE A WEAK STOMACH YOU MAY NOT WANT TO READ THIS*
This morning at 5am I began scratching my knee. It was red and after scratching, a big quarter size red welt appeared. I assumed at first I had been bitten by a mosquito or spider. 20 minutes later I was covered in those big welts on both my knees, down my legs, my butt, lower back, and both arms.
I took a shower thinking I should clean the areas then slathered on Dermasil but right after the shower I had MAJOR diarrhea and vomiting to the point where it was both coming out really runny and I fell asleep right afterwards and slept until 6pm.
Now that I am back awake, I do not feel sick at all but the welts are still extremely itchy and covering the same areas.
I don’t know if the welts and sickness are related other than they happened around the same time.
I have not been outside in days since I recently got out of the hospital with a kidney infection so I don’t think it is poison ivy, I have not changed any soaps or detergents, have not eaten anything differently, and we have 1 dog but she stays outdoors and I have seen no fleas in our home.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is it something associated with pregnancy (this is my 6th one but I’ve never had this happen before) or have any of you had this and not been pregnant.
I’ve been googling all day and even looking up staph infections since I was in the hospital recently but I can’t narrow it down since most sites are of people also asking what it is.
The itching is driving me nuts and if anyone has had this and know what I could use to get relief I’d appreciate it.

I can’t put my dog down because of all his problems, what else can I do?
Posted by: | CommentsHi.
I was wondering if you could help. We have a 12 year old unneutered mini dachshund.
In the last 6 months, he has been at the vet 4 times for various issues. Every 3 months he
has prostate problems – and gets urinary tract infections that are very painful and he urinates blood.
After taking an antibiotic he is ok for another 3 months. He has been through 4 cycles of this.
4 months ago – he developed a skin condition in which he has lost all the hair on his right side.
He has a rash and scratches and scratches. He smells terribly. He bites between his paws frantically.
His teeth are bad and stink and his eyes are beginning to whiten from cataracts.
He urinates everywhere – he has always had a problem, but it has gotten worse since the prostate episodes. The vet has said that even if we neutered him, which we cannot afford,
it wouldn’t help – its behavioral at this point.
If we get up from the couch, he pees on it – and then growls at us and walks stiffly away with his hackles up.
He has to sleep in the laundry room and every night prior to putting him to bed, he almost tries to
bite us because he doesn’t want to go in that room.
We are so upset.
We have spent over $500 for him in the last 6 months with no relief. He is literally destroying our home.
We can’t have company over because he pees all over their stuff or on the person themself.
It is a miserable experience – even writing this I feel very selfish. He has been our best friend since he was 6 weeks old. I think he is completely “with it.” The vet tells us that there is nothing we can do.
We can’t pay to have his teeth removed – because we don’t have $500.
The vet has already done a mange/mite test. We have also paid for flea stuff.
Any diaper situation we have tried he pulls off.
We don’t want to torture him anymore by getting mad at him – because it isn’t his fault.
Both my husband and I could never put him down unless he was suffering mercilessly which I don’t think he is.
We are afraid he will bite us at some point because he is so mad that we put him in the laundry room.
He is quarantined from much of the house – it is no way to live. We have a 5 year old bassett – and the bassett has to
get quarantined much like the dachshund. It is a miserable life for them.
Please help us with some advice of what to do. Our house stinks horribly. We don’t want to get rid of him. I think the only thing I would
feel comfortable with and it would emotionally kill me, is if he went with someone who took really good care of him.
Please don’t attack me for not training him/not fixing him/ or entertaining the thought of putting him down. This is eating me alive.
He sleeps in the laundry room because he pees in our bed while we sleep.
I have a fleece blanket for each of the dogs on the floor that I have to wash every day.
dog scratches and chews at feet?
Posted by: | Commentsshort-hair, no hair loss, no fleas. underside of feet, ankles, belly-groin area seems red, slight odor. Any good home remedies to give her relief will be appreciated. Thanks
I have a 5 yrs. old Pekingese. And for 3 of those years “Sammy” has been suffering .?
Posted by: | CommentsHe has a cronic skin infection. I was told it could be allergies. So I changed his food, got flea treatment, shampoos, lotions, animal dermatology visits, holistic treatments. He now is on an anti-fungal, steriod and antibiotic meds. He does good for a while …then he flares up again. Not to mention he kinda smells (like corn chips), and his skin gets really dark and he soon starts to lose his hair. Oh yeah …AND his skin oozes……and no one can tell me what’s going on with my baby. Not even his vet. They just keep giving me meds to give him. But they only work for about 2-3 months then we are back at the same thing all over again. And I know that over a period of time the steriod is going to do damage. So can someone please give me some advice. Maybe you’ve gone through something similar. Any home remedies? I’ll try anything to give Sammy some relief. Only heart felt answers please. Thank you.
I can’t get rid of the fleas!!?
Posted by: | CommentsI realized about a month ago that my cat has fleas. I had treated him with a topical and the next morning my son’s socks were covered with fleas. Anyway, I spent that day cleaning up then went to the vet and bought spray and Capstar pills. I gave my cat a pill then I sprayed all my carpets and under everything in the house. I then brought my cat home and washed him. I was told not to put more topical on him. I waited a week to vacuum as advised. I was still finding fleas so the next weekend I bombed my home. It didn’t seem to help either so I went to the vet. I was told I could wash my cat again and use another topical treatment since I washed the first off 48 hours after application (and there being zero relief from fleas). Its been two weeks and I am still finding up to ten fleas on my cat per day. I have vacuumed every day (I have put a piece of flea collar in it, or sprayed it with the stuff I used to treat my home. I also throw the bag away every couple days), used a flea comb on my cat at least once a day. I have even used borax on my carpets and around the edges of the carpeting and linoleum. Nothing seems to be working. He got worms(I treated those two weeks ago). Now he has a sore that appears to be getting worse. He keeps licking it. I put a veterinary grade neosporine on it, but he licked it off. I hope it isn’t ring worm. I have spent about $200 dollars on this and I literally have nothing left to spend. Any advice? I’m exhausted…and broke!! Will getting rid of the cat help or will the bugs just bite me and my son (I’ve only gotten a couple of what I think may have been bites and he hasn’t gotten any).
Alyssa E- I know getting rid of him would be terrible…I don’t want to and I figure the buggers will just turn on my son and me. My freezer is too small so I’ve bought lots of vacuum bags. I’ve never heard of seven dust but will look it up for sure. I have considered the exterminator. They Want $125 dollars that I don’t have right now and they said that what I have already done should get rid of the problem. They also said vacuuming along with it would get rid of the bugs…As for ring worm, I’m going to keep an eye on it for a couple days, I think it may be irritation from the fleas, but I just don’t know. I never thought of the vet keeping him, my guess is that it would cost money, but I may ask. As for me and my son, I don’t have anywhere to stay, we just leave the apartment with the cat each time we treat the home. We don’t have a yard and are on the second floor, but he is strictly an indoor cat. I did treat my car, may do it again too.
Wow, I didn’t expect this many responses. Thanks to all!!
MandaBear-I did wash everything in the apartment that I could remove. $30 bucks at the laundromat. I treated his bedding a couple extra times. I wash his perch weekly as well. I also vacuum the couch…not daily because it takes me about 20-30 minutes to run the vacuum hose over every cushion and the couch itself.
I don’t really want to get rid of the cat he’s such a good boy. I lost my job last April, have been on unemployment, and going to college instead of work, this flea infestation has really hurt my funds, and I can’t afford to take him to the vet. I am a foster for the local animal shelter but they are closing it down so I don’t know if they are going to be able to help me right now.
Cptokay- my vet suggested calling the manufacturers of the products I used and ask why they aren’t working. I have to wait until Monday since they are closed. He couldn’t tell me anything else…I’m doing all the things they told me and more
Sticki Chick-Yeah I don’t let him outside. We had a racoon problem in the wooded area next to the apartment, I can’t imagine him getting into it with one of those guys. I’m not supposed to wash the cat because I treated him recently, but before the next treatment, I will definitely wash him as you suggest. I’ve thought about the water bowls, but I think my son would forget about them and make a mess. Never heard of the oral treatment, will check into that. As for the topical, it goes on the scruff of his neck, I’m not sure he could reach it while it was wet.
Miranda-no we can’t figure out where the bugs came from. We’re on the second floor. Maybe the maintenance man who works outside a lot. No other people or animals in the apartment recently. I’ve heard of the diatomaceous earth…may try that too.
Lotstquestions…-All the product I bought except the collar and shampoo I got from my vet ( I also tried dawn), I heard the department store stuff has a high concentration of the chemicals that kill fleas, but it tends to be too much for the animal.
This was my first question…thanks to all for your advice, I really appreciate it!!
Topical itch remedy for dogs?
Posted by: | CommentsJust wondering whether any of you wonderful people have any tried and true home itch relief concoctions that you’d be willing to share?
One of my four dogs – she’s a small Pekingese/Poodle mix – seems to have a flea allergy. I recently gave them all their monthly flea meds. I usually use Frontline Plus, but for some reason, this time the vet’s office gave my husband something called Comfortis instead. Frontline works like a charm. Comfortis…not so much.
The poor girl has chewed at the base of her back so much that she’s now got scabs there, which I know have to be attracting whatever fleas are still left following the not so efficient flea medication. I put her in a cone so that she can’t actively chew herself, but I know she’s still itching like crazy, as she’s whining – and she’s one of the most stoic little animals I know, so I know it’s driving her nuts.
I know that with most flea meds you can’t put one over another one, so I really don’t want to dose her with Frontline so close to having the other medication. I’ve added vinegar to her drinking water, which is supposed to help with the fleas, but do you know anything that I can apply to her topically to help her with the itching, or maybe suggest a product I can buy that’s worked for you in the past?
Many thanks.
Did you know about these home remedies?……..?
Posted by: | CommentsDid You Know That? Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately — without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional “pain relievers.”
Did you know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns.
Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They’ll clear up your stuffed nose.
Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.
Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.
Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer . Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly — even though the product was never advertised for this use. ( Note : Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine is not the same..and contains aspirin, which can cause stomach bleeding if you have ulcers.)
Honey remedy for skin blemishes … Cover the blemish with a! dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.
Listerine < < /I > > therapy for toenail fungus … Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.
Easy eyeglass protection … To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.
Coca-Cola cure for rust … Forget those expensive rust removers. Just saturate an abrasive sponge with Coca Cola and scrub the rust stain. The phosphoric acid in the coke is what gets the job done. FYI, coca-cola is also used to shine shoes and clean car engines. I know people who do this and it works. (Scary that people still drink it.)
Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer … If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can’t find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409 . Insects drop to the ground instantly.
Smart splinter remover …just pour a drop of Elmer’s Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.
Hunt’s tomato paste boil cure ….cover the boil with Hunt’s tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.
Balm for broken blisters …To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine … a powerful antiseptic.
Heinz vinegar to heal bruises … Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.
Kills fleas instantly . Dawn dish washing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog’s bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Goodbye fleas.
Rainy day cure for dog odor … Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.
Eliminate ear mites … All it takes is a few drops of Wesson corn oil in your cat’s ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat’s skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.
Quaker Oats for fast pain relief ….It’s not for breakfast anymore! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

What can I do about dog losing hair on tail?
Posted by: | CommentsMy 7 year old Chihuahua keeps biting the hair from her tail and backside. I keep taking her to the vet and I’ve gotten answers from allergies to impacted anal glands to yeast infections to heredity but no consistent relief for her yet. The last time he didn’t even send antibiotics home for her (she bites and makes sores on her skin), but gave her the routine shot in the office and some prescription shampoo and leave on conditioner. Well now her tail has bloody sores all over it again. She’s been spayed and is on flea treatment so I can rule those two issues out. Her mother and sister did had similar problems so I do wonder if it’s hereditary. Anyone else have any experience with this? I know it hurts/aggravates her and she looks pitiful. Even if it is just bad genes shouldn’t there be something to help her?
