Transmission of ticks in a grooming shop?

Posted by: | Comments (8)

I own mobile grooming vans. We have a customer who claims that her dog was severely infested with ticks after a grooming session in our van. She claims that she found ticks on her dog immediately after his groom and now she has an infestation that has cost her hundreds of dollars in vet bills.

I’ve tried to assure her of the following:
1. After each groom all surfaces are sanitized and vacuumed.
2. At the end of each day, all hair, debris, trash, towels (used or unused), used blades, water are removed from the van. Van is sanitized and all crevices are vacuumed.
3. Once a week, everything is removed from the van (table, cabinets, tools) and washed. Her groom session occurred the day after a weekly scrubdown.
4. We’ve had no parasite issues either before or after her groom. Nothing has been reported by customers or by our groomers, nor have we personally seen any indication of any sort of infestation (vans, hair and towels come to our house so we’d be infested if vans were infested).

Am I mistaken? Could there have been a risk to just her pet from something in our van that would have resulted in an immediate and massive problem?

I tried to find some pertinent information applicable to grooming to give her but while I can find information on ticks, I can find no mention of risk of transmission from groom shops.

Any thoughts?
Thanks

whats the best way to groom my dog?

Posted by: | Comments (3)

I have a 16week old chow-chow i brush him daily and bath him about 2 times a month. i want to know the best tools to use short of taking him to a groomer

I bought some clippers and they don’t even cut my dogs hair at all! Can’t afford taking two little guys to the groomers all the time and feel confident I could do it myself with the right tools.

1st- could you recommend me a good site for stripping techniques.
2nd- a list of tools needed
3rd- what type of stripper needed, like size( there are several different “sizes” for different types of coats and what have you)
I haven’t the dog yet but i really want to learn every little thing i can before i get it.

Why do people like dogs more than cats?

Posted by: | Comments (22)

I want to know why because more people neglect, make fun of, abuse, and sometimes just kill kitties. It makes me sad. I mean, if there was an electrical feild, and you had 3 choices (cat, dog, or human) the most likely choice would probably be a kitten. People dont care for cats and i think thats just sad. People have more grooming tools for dogs. If you were to search your entire state to find either stray dogs or stray cats, there would most likely be more stray cats. 2% of 5% of cats are retrieved from the pound. 40% out of 50% of dogs are retrieved. Nobody really likes cats and i need help to know why. (Even if you don’t like them,)
Do it for the Kitties

My groomer retired (without notice) and I haven’t found another. My Persian is getting matted and I don’t want to hurt him. He is rather old. I have every grooming tool, but wonder if there is a way to soften the mats to make him more comfortable.

I bought two products at the store, but one says to soak your pet in a bath and the other has you spray stuff on him. Guess what, he is not going to tolerate either of those.

There must be some old fashioned remedies out there. I know my parents never spent money on grooming. Something must work well that our parents and grandparents used before paying for a groomer became popular.

I love my animals, but am not a very good groomer. I have found a new person to groom my dogs, but not every groomer does cats.

I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you!

I’m looking for a good comb or brush for my dog for her birthday. at first i was looking at those really good ones (like the furminator and such) but those brushes appear to be really sharp on the edge. My dog has very sensitive skin and after brushing for a few minutes with normal brushes she usually starts to get very irritated and the brushes begin to hurt her. the best thing that i have been able to use on her is this- http://www.petedge.com/Master-Grooming-Tools-Steel-Greyhound-Combs-TP906.pro?PIPELINE_SESSION_ID=32eeff6cc0a86e660061f533402bf16a . it works good but im lookig for something that can work even better. shes a pug- so her fur is not that thick- and any type of brush with sharp tips will definitly hurt her. anyone have any product ideas? thanks

My dog hates having his nails groomed?

Posted by: | Comments (7)

no matter how slowly I introduce the trimmer or dremel he still freaks out when I hold his paw to shorten his nails. He doesn’t freak out when I hold his paw without the trimmer/dremel just when the grooming tools are around. Everything I’ve tried, treats, gentile corrections, making sure he’s worn out first, fails. He’s too big for me to physically restrain and I’d really hope to not have to do that but I’m starting to think it’s the only way. Should I get someone to help me or just take him to the groomers to have it done? Would a sedative from the vet be helpful? I don’t like the idea of sedating him but I don’t want his quicks to grow out too long.
I’ve tried with both a handheld clipper and dremel. He’ll wake up if he’s sleeping and I try to do it and freaks out. I’ve tried the while-sleeping trick, it hasn’t worked.
It’s a dremel made for use on pets. What do you think that PetiPaws/Peticure thing is? A dremel with a cover.

How to pluck dog’s ears?

Posted by: | Comments (8)

I have my dogs groomed on a frequent basis, but during the winter I find it unneccessary to take them because I bathe, brush, and clip their nails myself(don’t worry special tools!). Now, I guess my question is; Is there a specific method or way that you should pluck your dog’s ears, or is that something you should leave for the experts and let grow over the winter?
