Aussie grooming tips for a novice?

I got my australian shepherd about 6 months ago and he is 3 years old. I would really prefer to groom and clip him myself rather than pay to have him groomed (especially since I am looking for a new job and don’t have much cash to spare) but I have never owned a dog that required any sort of real grooming (I’ve had boxers, dobies and great danes in the past). His coat seems to be longer and more wavy than aussies I’ve met in the past if that makes a difference.

Even if you don’t have any breed specific advice – what do I need to know to start grooming him myself? What tools do I need? Any resources you can point me to?
