I’ve been using Petromalt – the malt flavor – for around 5 years. It seems to be a little thicker than other brands I’ve tried – maybe that is the reason mine prefer this brand over the others. It comes out of the tube like a semi-hard piece of candy. The moment I get the saucer out of the cabinet that I use for this, my cats all come running. I yell out to them “do you want some candy?” and they are all sitting there waiting for it. I just put it on the saucer, I don’t have to force it on them, they readily lick it off the plate.

I tried other brands when the Petromalt was sold out and what a waste of money, they don’t touch the others.

This works – the active ingredient is mineral oil. One of my cats is a long-haired Maine Coon – she won’t let me brush her – and as long as I remember to give this to her, I have no hairball problems at all.

The only comment I would add to Jennifer’s review is, if possible, it’s better to give the Petromalt to a cat on an empty stomach and not with food as it may inhibit the absorption of some of the nutrients in its food. My cats love to lick a one-inch strip of the Petromalt right off my finger as an evening treat several hours away from feeding time. One 14-year-old cat needs it daily to help prevent constipation, and the other one only needs it once a week to prevent vomiting up hair balls.

Here’s a good link for info on cat constipation that I recently found: [...]

I give my two cats Petromalt twice a week. It works well to cut down the instances of hair balls. This is a good buy and shipment was quick.

I have TWO long-haired cats, and one of them spends her days obsessively grooming herself. You know what that leads to: hairballs all over the house. We got sick of cleaning those up all the time and picked up some petromalt that a friend recommended.

It’s a meaty-smelling sort of paste that you rub on your cat’s side (or paw, although that ends up getting it tracked all over the house) and they instinctively clean it off until it’s gone. I.e. they eat it, it helps the hair go down and get digested normally instead of getting stuck and coming back up on your carpet/furniture, and everyone’s happier!

Alternately, you could pay $100+ to get your cat a lion cut every few months, which also stops hairballs, but the Petromalt is much cheaper :)
