What is the best Shampoo to Rid Dandruff on a Dog?

By

my dogie has white flakes coming up from his coat and I would like to take care of that. Being that he is sensitive and has short hair and preferably the breed is American Pit Bull (Staff) it’s important that his coat has the luster and shine accompanied by a breed like this. This just started up and I want to control this from getting out of hand. And by the way does anyone know what could have cause it?

Shampoo is usually not the answer.

A good diet, brushing, and not-too-frequent bathing are usually the key to a good coat. A dry coat is rarely helped by more bathing.

If you’re not feeding a good diet, that is the first place to start. You can do everything else right, and if you’re feeding junk it will get you nowhere.

Speak with a pet food pro at your local feed store (something higher up on the chain than PetSmart and Coop). Poor skin can be a sign of food allergy….. as the previous answerer said, diet is your first course of action.

Bathing should be done with mild, mild dog shampoo, either RX or Oatmeal OTC. I bathe mine weekly, but that’s unusual based on their job.

As others have said, this is a problem that needs to be worked with from the inside out. A high quality food will do much more for your dog than shampoo. If you are not able to switch to a better food, I recommend a pump bottle of Salmon Oil. The omega oils will do wonders for dry, flaky coats on dogs and cats. You can purchase it from a pet store. Follow the directions on the back to determine how many pumps to give for your dog’s weight. It’s given once daily and you will notice results within a few weeks.

Allergroom shampoo and Humilac spray humectant can help much with dander. All dogs will have dander to a degree-it’s natural shedding of dead skin cells. If it’s excessive, it could be because of poor diet (are you feeding a food from Wal-Mart?) or because of a medical issue. A few great foods: Innova, Prairie, California Natural, Healthwise, Canidae, Solid Gold, Blue Buffalo, Taste of the Wild, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul, Flint River Ranch, and Merrick.

If you’re already feeding a super-premium food, and your vet has ruled out a medical problem, you may want to consider a skin and coat supplement. Efa-Z plus (made by Virbac, and available from vet’s offices without a prescription) is a great one. Lambert Kay Shed Relief is available at pet supply stores (though it’s not as good).

1 – I would encourage you to use herbal dandruff relief
2 – Using a herbal remedy on your dog will not hurt them as some shampoos would
3 – Here’s a few you can take a look at – http://www.tr.im/dandruff and http://tr.im/dryscalp
