Buddhists: Is the idea of endless rebirth a happy or depressing concept to you?

By

By rebirth – meaning, you’re reborn as another human, a pig, a fly, a dog, anything. And you want to escape this endless cycle through enlightenment, right – which according to Buddhism puts a stop to the cycle completely.

Just wondering, what is the scientific evidence that you can actually control what you get reborn as? Is there a god that somehow dictates this process – otherwise /what/ funnels the choice as to whether you’re reborn as a fly, a king or never reborn at all?

I do not mean this to be offensive – genuinely curious because I do believe in some of the concepts of Buddhism but not all and trying to learn more about it.
NON-BUDDHISTS please feel free to reply as well

It’s not endless if you can eventually obtain enlightenment and enter nirvana

2

Sounds better than heaven or hell. Definitely sounds better than nothing.

3

I don’t believe you can control what you are reborn as.

I find it a joyful concept, it seems very nice. Especially if your family is reborn with you. However, the part, that you don’t recall your past lives, is a bit depressing. But, it’s probably for the best.

It’s not endless, if you enter Nirvana, though.

Well, I’ve studied a little Buddhism, and it sounds like a happy and depressing concept, depending on what you are reborn as.

There’s absolutely no scientific evidence for any religion. Some Buddhists believe the Buddha is a deity and conducts it, and/or they are part of him, some have their own deities, others are their own deities. Karma generally dictates what you’re reborn as. Or maybe I’m thinking of Hinduism…

The liberation from the endless rebirth is supposed to be more peaceful, calmer. I really can’t describe that, though… sorry. But it sounds depressing to me. You’re never reborn again? No more people? That’s really depressing. Kinda boring, you can’t do something like be a sports star or a movie star?

6

I’m obviously quite silly, because I want to come back until we’re all ready to stop.

I have no evidence of rebirth, and I don’t think it’s useful to dwell on something of which I have no memory.

But I wouldn’t want to miss a second of it. If you’re coming back, I’m coming with you. I’ll be whatever you need.

Endless rebirth seems to me to be *MUCH* better than eternity in the Christian heaven.

Buddhism is centered on the notion of escaping Samsara, this is the whole point of attaining enlightenment, no?

9

There’s no god to control the cycle – you’re not judged, and there’s no “salvation.” All there is in the cycle of samsara is karma – an impersonal force of cause and effect.

The only control you can try to exercise is to control your behavior so that you try not to accumulate bad karma and try to rid yourself of attachment to desires. However, you could still be working out the karma from several lifetimes ago, so it’s not like if you mind your behavior in this lifetime, you can be sure that you’ll escape the cycle.

Well first off, I don’t think enlightenment is meant to be what it seems. It’s not to be ‘heavenly’ or ‘divine’ or in constant ‘happiness and joy’. I believe it’s just meant that you are self aware. You’re aware there is an extreme difference between the ‘Needs’ and ‘Wants’ in life and the true importance of giving to others without investing any judgement, or unjust manner. And truly realizing every thing, being, creature, spec of anything on this earth is one in the same. We are all equal, we are all light and dirt. We’re nothing and everything.

As for rebirth, if we’re one in the same and all is everything. We will all simply come back as nothing. And if nothing is everything, then what’s it matter if you come back as a fly, a pig, a king, or never reborn at all. If you have lived, you will remain always as nothing.

Science has no bearing on Religious matters, Thomas Aquinas pointed that out all the way back in the 13th century. Science deals only with the mechanisms by which the observable Universe operates, anything outside that is the Province of religion, which, being based on faith, doesn’t require evidence.

depressing lol…that is why you try to END it and get out of this place forever…you don’t wan to be dragged back here after some time…some say the world is a “trap’ for ‘cosmic energy’

“Moksha” is the liberation from “Samsara”, which is the cycle of rebirth. The idea is if the current life ends before you find enlightenment, then you start over again. I don’t think it’s so much that you control what kind of life you are re-born into but that the state of your consciousness determines the conditions. It’s a karmic thing.

Enlightenment is not supposed to be some great mystical happening or unattainable state reserved for spiritual elites. It’s supposed to be something so simple that our over complicating minds just have difficulty seeing through the dualistic illusions in life known as “Maya”.

It can’t really be depressing if it espouses the idea of finding inner joy, peace, and contentment… Not through external sources.

Eventually, all things that have sprung up from the Dharma return to it. The oneness that seems so unlikely to our dualistic minds is something that the most recent discoveries in sciences like quantum physics seem to be pointing towards.

Observations by Max Planck and Albert Einstein, as well as many other physicists seem to point in a direction that alligns itself with Buddhist teachings. Also if you watch the movie/ documentaries “What the Bleep Do We Know” and “The Secret”, it’s amazing that Western science is just in recent decades catching up to what the Rishis, Yogis, and Buddhist priests and monks have documented between 2,500 and 5,000 years ago it Vedic and Buddhist texts.

You can check out this story regarding reincarnation if you like. I believed in reincarnation before seeing this video but the story really reinforces my belief.

i’ll answer in the form of a talk; if this is the only hope you have for extra existence after this one, then the prospects are not only dismal but unreliable. ou can be as nice as you want to be, as humanitarian as possible, as giving to others as you can afford to be, as loving as possible, as compassionate,or ny other worthy attribute one could hopeto have or possess, and it wouldn’t make a diference whatsoever. you are controlled by a force unknown to you, no relationship with this force, no knowing. no hope, no future, no promise. is this force good or evil, benevolent, loving, caring, or just a force above you of which you have no part or say so. to me this would be unthinkable!

I belive rebirth. If we are living in good health, conduct we will be rebith in good way.

It is total upsetting to be reborn as a pig or an ant, unless one reaches full Enlightenment, then nothing of extreme suffering would mean anything.

This is why Buddhist teachings and teachers all stress practices to help us achieve Enlightenment, at least to the level of non-regression.

Self awareness is part of it, but not in the ordinary sense like the Muslim girl said, most people don’t know what they are doing, even if and when they feel they have the full control of their awareness and body faculties. This is not the mundane awareness we try to achieve, because no one can manage their future even if they are slight clear minded.

When one achieve Enlightenment, one can not only control ones’ own destiny, but others as well; even to the extent of changing the weather, Earth moment and the Universe itself.

How the decision is made in the Reincarnation cycle is not control of any God, but of what you do in life would causes you to rebirth in different circumstances in another life.

Killers will be killed by those he killed or as animal be killed many thousands of times by others right after they completed their Hell experiences.

Those that are misery will become hungry ghosts or poor human in life, those of righteous will go to Heavens; those acts like animals will become animals; those don’t even deserve to be animals will go lower. This is the causes and effects, the Laws of Karma.

Scientifically speaking, you can never find proofs with equipments, because we wouldn’t even find the smallest particle in this Universe, how can we come up with equipment that needs to measure spiritual factor and trans-dimensional axis?

Fortunately there is one way to prove it, but it take many years to do it, because our human mind is move too fast and not fast enough. Too fast, because our brains are using electrical energy, so the speed of our brain and our thoughts are moving at almost half the speed of light. But our minds are too slow because our brains cannot go beyond the speed of light, because the limitation of our brains’ capacity.

So we must slow down and speed up at the same time. Slow down so our mind can be aware, and speed up so we are fully aware. The slowing down portion will take you years to perfect.

Once you slow your mind down to certain level, your mind will catch up with the speed of light, then you will travel back in time, well at least your time- your past lives; that is how we Buddhist prove there is Cycle of Rebirth, and some Hinduism practitioners can do this too.

I’ll answer your question with a question, if you had a chance to live your life again, and do better, whithout making as many mistakes, and have a chance at making even a better live for your self. Would you, Well I would. I don’t believe anyone would want to live their life again for the chance to make it worse. Just my opinion.
